A few months ago I discovered a great gem in The Wardrobe Boutique of The Career Wardrobe. A few people at work are involved in the nonprofit and we often send our clients there to get interview outfits (the organization provides professional attire and programs for women). The actual location is on 12th and Chestnut, but they’re moving about two blocks away.

Since they’re moving, they held a super sale where you pay $10 and fit as much in a bag as you can. I didn’t have much luck with the clothes, but I got a bunch of shoes. In all, I got six pairs of shoes, one clutch, a pin, a belt, two skirts and suit all for $10!

Heels that say “Made by order of the Queen of England” inside…whatever that means.

Got these to just give away, but I kind of like them. They’re some comfort line of a designer shoe — can’t remember who though.

This is a little late, but Dr. Dog is pretty much the best ever. They played a free half-hour concert last week and took requests for an additional hour! The show was so great, of course.

High-Calorie, High-Fat Foods Can Be as Addictive as Cocaine

A new study published in Nature Neuroscience suggests that high-calorie, high-fat foods may be just as addictive as cocaine and heroin. “When rats consume these foods in great enough quantities, it leads to compulsive eating habits that resemble drug addiction, the study found,” Health.com reported. The rats in the study that were fed these unhealthy foods developed a tolerance to the pleasure it gave them and had to consume more and more to experience the same level of satisfaction. “The fact that junk food could provoke this response isn’t entirely surprising, says Dr. Gene-Jack Wang, M.D., the chair of the medical department at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Brookhaven National Laboratory, in Upton, New York,” Health.com reported. ” ‘We make our food very similar to cocaine now,’ he says.” Dr. Wang means that we purify our food in a way that our ancestors never could: Instead of eating corn, for example, we eat corn syrup. In other words, just as cocaine has been purified over many years, so to has our food. “The ingredients in purified modern food cause people to ‘eat unconsciously and unnecessarily,’ and will also prompt an animal to ‘eat like a drug abuser [uses drugs],’ says Wang.”

Next Up: Guantanamo

Health care might turn out to be a piece of cake in comparison. Now the administration has to figure out what to do about Guantanamo, and where and how to try Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and four other men accused of plotting the Sept. 11 attacks. And, unlike health care, “there doesn’t seem to be even the dim possibility of a political upside for the White House,” notes Politico. The Hill says Rep. Peter King, the ranking member of the House Homeland Security Committee, said he got a call from the White House telling him that as soon as health care passed, attention would turn to Guantanamo. As Politico points out, while the most immediate question is the trial of the Sept. 11 suspects, the real question is whether President Obama is ready to give up on civilian trials for the terrorist suspects. Most of Obama’s advisers seem to support the idea of trying Khalid Sheikh Mohammed in a military commission, which would be a huge embarrassment to Attorney General Eric Holder, not to mention that it could open up Obama to criticism that he is compromising on his principles. Yet if he continues to push the issue, there’s no question that Republicans would try to exploit it for all it’s worth in the upcoming midterm elections. Now it seems likely the White House will figure out a “grand bargain” with Sen. Lindsey Graham in which the Republican senator would support establishing a detention facility in Illinois for some Guantanamo detainees in exchange for military tribunals for the Sept. 11 suspects. The Wall Street Journal had claimed that a deal was close to being reached, but Graham denied that this past week.

Judge won’t try Pa. boy, 12, as juvenile in murder

NEW CASTLE, Pa. – A judge says a western Pennsylvania boy who was 11 when he allegedly killed his father’s pregnant fiancee with a shotgun will be tried as an adult for murder.

Jordan Brown is charged with killing 26-year-old Kenzie Marie Houk in their western Pennsylvania farmhouse last February. Houk’s unborn son also died.

A defense psychologist testified that the case should be moved to juvenile court, in part, because an adolescent’s brain does not control impulses in a “mature way.” But a prosecution psychiatrist says Brown isn’t likely to be rehabilitated in juvenile court, which would have jurisdiction over him only until he is 21.

Lawrence County Judge Dominick Motto on Monday ordered Brown, who is now 12, be tried as an adult. If convicted, he faces life in prison.
